Taking the first step toward a family law case can feel overwhelming. A little practical and emotional preparation can make a big difference in your confidence in the process.

Prior to your consultation use this checklist to ensure organization clarity and understanding.

📂 Key Documents to Gather

You do not need everything perfectly sorted. Having these items available can help your attorney better understand your situation.

Personal InformationFull legal names for you your spouse and any childrenDates of birthSocial Security numbers if accessible

Financial RecordsRecent pay stubs or proof of incomeLast 2 to 3 years of tax returnsBank account statementsCredit card statementsRetirement and investment account summaries

Property and AssetsDeeds or mortgage statementsVehicle titles or loan informationLists of major assets and debts

Children and ParentingSchool and daycare informationCurrent schedules and routinesAny existing parenting agreements or court orders

Legal Documents if applicablePrenuptial or postnuptial agreementsPrior court filings or ordersProtective orders or police reports

If you do not have access to all of these that is okay. Bring what you can. Your attorney can help identify next steps.

Legal preparation is important but emotional readiness matters just as much.

Before your consultation take a moment to:

Clarify your goalsWhat matters most to you such as stability time with your children financial clarity or peace of mind

Separate facts from feelingsStrong emotions are normal. Writing down key events or concerns can help keep discussions focused

Give yourself permission to pauseYou do not have to decide everything at once. This process is about understanding your options not rushing decisions
